White House Officials and Governor Patrick launch Advanced Manufacturing Initiative

White House officials and Governor Deval Patrick teamed up with dozens of manufacturing executives and public officials at MIT yesterday to launch a new initiative that aims to increase the viability of the advanced manufacturing sector in Massachusetts.  Participating in the forum was our own MetroWest Chamber President & CEO, Bonnie Biocchi and Board member Paul Bauer from Bowditch and Dewey.

"The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership brings together national leaders in the industry, education and government to explore investments in emerging technologies that will create high quality manufacturing jobs and enhance our global competitiveness," Patrick said.

The conference focused on removing the barriers to investment in U.S. advanced manufacturing, including reviewing tax and innovation policy, regulatory policy and trade policy.  Additionally the group discussed how to better support collaborative efforts between university and industry sectors.  Because there is an anticipated shortage of skilled workers for the advanced manufacturing industry within the next decade, efforts are underway to re-invigorate   technical school, community college and project based instruction for  these jobs.

The Governor announced the creation of the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative, which aims to promote the sector, create a steady flow of workers, provide technical assistance to advanced manufacturers, reduce the cost of doing business in the state and ensure adequate access to capital.  Secretary Bialecki made a similar announcement in Clinton yesterday morning.
